Rushing through
homework
food, people
Everything
People come and go
like the bell
that tells them to do so
the occasional carelessness
wetted the table
with a puddle
of water
Multi-tasking as they eat
messaging
music
Anything
the bell rings
Again
phones, plates, everything
are all kept
the place becomes silent
yet again
waiting for the next crowd
again

The first stanza talks about the pupils in the canteen trying to finish up their imcomplete homework. it seems like the pupils rushes through almost everything during the limited 1/2 hour of recess time.
The second stanza talks about the pupils and teachers coming down to the canteen for recess. it is as if like they are 'controlled' by the half hourly bell which rings and tells them that it is time for a break.
the third stanza talks about accidents that students have caused. the accidental carelessness made the table wet. they just have to walk away from the n\mess they created and forget but they left an extra job for the cleaners.
4th stanza: the pupils do not fully relax and enjoy their breaktime but instead still doing different things while they are relaxing. other than messaging they are still doing things like chatting. but most people would do this right?:)
in the 5th and last stanza, the 'end of recess' bell rings again after the 'start of recess' bell. this tells the students that their recess and relax time is over. everything is kept and the canteen becomes silent once again waiting for the next group to continue the same cycle again.
Yes, most people would do things similar to what you have observed. Out of curiosity, what do you think of such a routine? Being a slave to the bell? What's the (multi-)function played by a bell in school and in different contexts? Do ponder over this. =)
the multi-functions of the bell reminds people that it is time for school and home, as well as, for recess and class. In a way, you can say that they are 'slaves' to the bell. They do not have a choice but to obey the bell when it rings even if they do not want or feel to.
'Rushing through homework' are you referring to yourself Geraldine. LOL, kidding(:
I like this poem. Reflective of us students. Rushing everything during recess.
