To die takes just a little while
They say it doesn't hurt
It's only fainter by degrees
And then its out of sight
A darker Ribbon for a Day
A Crape upon the Hat
And then the pretty sunshine comes
And helps us to forget
The absent mystic creature
That but for love of us
Had gone to sleep that soundest time
Without the weariness
Hey guys. Azyan here. Well, I actually found this poem while I was surfing on the net. Well, enjoy yeah! :)

Does this poem sound reassuring? Does it make you imagine anything? First, the thought of death is conjured, along with it, the idea of darkness and despair. People also wear dark-coloured clothes, accessories and hats at funerals. Think of the setting (Dickinson's time). Yet, in the immediate stanza that follows. we have 'the pretty sunshine' - the bright light that symbolises hope which drives the depressing darkness away. It doesn't take us long to forget about people who pass away... or perhaps the initial pain or sadness doesn't linger too long.
I feel that the poem is trying to reach out to the readers about the way a funeral is held and also, 'darker ribbon for a day' refers to the type of clothes that was set during Dickinson's time whereby they would wear that for the person who had had passed away. I can imagine that the setting is a rather serene and peaceful place that took place during the funeral.
From my point of view,I'll say that the loss of somebody in the poem,"untitled" is shown as a different way of a funeral.
Probably, pointing out to the people that funeral is of course a big "absent" of the person who died, but when looking in the positive side, it shows how the death as a "sleep" without "weariness" giving assurance to the family members, i supposed.
It'll give a big impact on the person's love ones but then on the other side of the story, the one that died might be resting in peace with the appearance of a "pretty sunshine." Reminds me of a tranquil death. =]
I like this poem. if feels as if like azyan said some one attending a funeral, but in this poem, there is more of a sense of peace, not greif although there is a little bit of that too. it seems that the poet is trying to convey that the peopson who has died had died without pain. 'gone to sleep... without the weariness'
A sense of acceptance is in the poem, and the love for the person can be felt.
This poem is talking about death. The tone for this poem to me is kind of peaceful. It states that "Had gone to sleep that soundest time/Without the weariness". It seems to be peaceful to me [:
oh. hahaha. so you're referring to a peaceful death cum funeral is it?
We find this poem extremely interesting as it is about learning to let go.
The evidence is 'That but for love of us'.
'Had gone to sleep that soundest time' and 'Without the weago from The absent mystic riness'
------------------------------
It is also to learn how to accept death as it states that 'the pretty sunshine' and 'helps us forget'

This poem uses black colour to comment....(to be continue) by feng yuan part....
It is supposed to a serene death right?Picturing the death as a long long undisturbed sleep;/
This poem includes imagery where it display a glimes view of the death 'A darker Ribbon for a Day
A Crape upon the Hat
And then the pretty sunshine comes
And helps us to forget' hence the poet is trying to put us in their shoe on having the view about someones death.
(sorry guys late reply)*.*
oh yess fallen=feng yuan
Great analogy by Fatinah on death as a 'long undisturbed sleep'. =)
But then again, is it always undisturbed? Hmmm... Think of grave robbers & etc? =P
